The Gambia and Senegal in West Africa have twice as many bird species as Northern Europe, and many of these are very exotic! And all this in a country only half the size of Wales which is easily reached by mainstream holiday companies like TUI, so prices are competitive. Birding in The Gambia is easy. Not only do most of us speak English, but we have The Gambia Bird Watchers Association (BWA) to train our bird guides to a high standard.
I am the Vice-President of the BWA. My name is Pa Ousman Jallow and I am a very experienced bird guide. You can hire me with transport for personal or small-group birding and photographic tours in Gambia and/or Senegal for half days, whole days, complete weeks and everything in-between. I can also recommend suitable accommodation as required.
Please send me an email or WhatsApp message (or phone me for free on WhatsApp) and let me know your plans and dates. I can then quote you firm prices.
Gambia is a very easy-going, friendly English-speaking destination with good hotels, restaurants, transport, and money exchange facilities – and very little crime. I think you will love our country, which is poor but full of smiling faces !

Two of us did a week’s birding in The Gambia. To help us get around we had a highly recommended bird guide, Pa Jallow, for the whole week.
Since we are both over 70 years old, Pa adapted his tours to what we could easily manage. He took us to several different habitats – open grasslands, forests, wetlands, sandy shorelines and dunes.
One particular favourite was Kotu Bridge & Creek, where the birdwatching was sensational. Pa took us ‘up-the-creek’ in an old punt, where Giant, Pygmy & Pied Kingfishers were all active at point-blank range, plus Umbrella Birds, Spur-winged Lapwing, Western Reef-Heron, Cormorants and so on.
The Gambia has about twice as many bird species as the UK, and that in such a tiny country! There are so many variations of almost everything, including Kingfishers (8 species), Swifts (5), Swallows & Martins (17), Hornbills (7), even Nightjars (8)!!!
It was normal to look up and see 20+ Hooded Vultures, plus many Black Kites. At one stop, a farmer was hand-digging his plot – surrounded by about 15 vultures, plus a few cattle egrets, all within a few metres. An unforgettable sight!
If you book Pa, he will happily take you further afield to ever more exotic sites (also in Senegal) to find your particular target birds. He’ll also provide you with all the practical information and advice you might need.
We had a great trip, so thank you Pa!
